"Not in My Back Yard (NIMBY)” is the mantra for neighborhood residents who have decided collectively that they do not want a certain agency or kind of service in their community. It is often the non-profit organizations that serve the most disenfranchised individuals and families that have to deal with this mentality.
The targeted clients typically range from men, women and youth who are homeless, who have mental health and addictions issues, or who have just been discharged from the corrections system, to those who are newly arrived in the country.
Reasons for NIMBYism
These resistant neighbors often develop an entire range of reasons for not wanting a service provided in any particular community.
